The island of Cyprus is an independent country basking in the warm currents of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Cyprus is situated 44 miles south of Turkey, 65 miles west of Syria and some 500 miles east of the Greek mainland. Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island after Sicily and Sardinia. The capital city of Cyprus, Nicosia, is located in the north central part of the country.
